Phinizy Swamp Nature Park

Sponsored by: Dover Corporation

Just minutes from downtown Augusta, Georgia, Phinizy Swamp Nature Park is a 1,100-acre man-made wetland preserve that blends science, nature, and recreation. Established in 1993 as part of the City of Augusta’s innovative wastewater treatment system, the Phinizy wetland system demonstrates how human ingenuity and natural ecosystems can work hand in hand. As treated water flows through a series of constructed wetland cells, it is naturally filtered while supporting a thriving habitat for an incredible diversity of wildlife.

Handicapped Access: Yes: Floodplain Boardwalk and Observation Deck – This is a .1 mile wooden boardwalk with a covered observation deck at the end. This boardwalk and deck are a wonderful introduction to the beauty of Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Overlooking the floodplain of Butler Creek, the boardwalk and deck provide an excellent spot to see many types of birds, including wading birds (such as the Great Egret), woodpeckers, blackbirds, warblers, and hawks. Also look for the trails through the marsh plants made by beaver, river otter and muskrat.

With over 14 acres of trails and boardwalks winding through open wetlands, cypress-tupelo swamps, and forested floodplains, visitors can explore a diverse landscape that offers habitat for a suite of resident and migratory birds. Nearly 250 bird species have been recorded here, making Phinizy one of the premier birding sites in the region.

Winter draws flocks of waterfowl such as teal, scaup, and shovelers; spring and fall migration fill the forest edges and trails with warblers, tanagers, and thrushes; and summer showcases an abundance of wading and wetland birds, including herons, egrets, and ibis. Observation blinds and elevated boardwalks offer great opportunities for birdwatching and photography without disturbing the wildlife.

Beyond birding, the Phinizy Center for Water Sciences, located within the park, hosts a wide range of educational programs, guided hikes, and research initiatives for both youth and adults, including Master Naturalist and several ornithology courses. Whether you’re a dedicated birder, a casual hiker, or a family looking to learn more about wetlands and wildlife, Phinizy Swamp Nature Park offers an inspiring glimpse into the harmony between nature and sustainable innovation.
