The Georgia Birding Trail is the legacy project of Birds Georgia in celebration of the group’s Centennial anniversary in 2026, created as a lasting gift to Georgia’s people and wildlife. The Trail is supported in part by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division and State Parks and Historic Sites. Additionally, the Georgia Birding Trail would not be possible without the support of dozens of local government agencies, non-governmental organizations, land trusts, and private landowners.

Birds Georgia
Birds Georgia is a member-supported, non-profit organization dedicated to building places where birds and people thrive. We are a thriving, bird-focused organization that combines serious conservation, education, and community engagement with activities that build community and foster the joy of birding.
On March 15, 1926, fourteen bird enthusiasts gathered in Carter R. Whittaker’s home with a shared purpose: “For the protection and study of our native birds.” Nearly a century later, that modest gathering has grown into Birds Georgia, the state’s longest continuously operating bird conservation organization. For 100 years, we have worked to protect birds, restore vital habitats, and inspire communities across Georgia to discover the joy of birding.
Georgia Department of Natural Resources – Wildlife Resources Division
The mission of the Wildlife Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is to conserve and promote fishing, hunting and wildlife resources through management, education and scientific research.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is comprised of five divisions which carry out DNR’s mission to sustain, enhance, protect and conserve Georgia’s natural, historic and cultural resources. As one of five divisions within DNR, the Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) is charged with conserving, enhancing and promoting Georgia’s wildlife resources, including game and nongame animals, fish and protected plants. WRD is comprised of four sections: Game Management, Fisheries Management, Wildlife Conservation, Communication, and Education & Outreach.
Georgia Department of Natural Resources – State Parks and Historic Sites
The Department of Natural Resources’ Division of State Parks & Historic Sites manages more than 60 properties that preserve the state’s environment and history. From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Colonial Coast, our sites offer an exceptional variety of resources: Mountains & Canyons, Forests, Fields & Marshes, Waterfalls, Lakes, Swamps & Rivers, Battlefields, Historic Homes & Native American Sites
Through these sites, we provide important habitat for plants and animals, give people a place to enjoy the outdoors, and protect historic places where future generations can learn about the past. The mission of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources State Parks and Historic Sites is to protect our state’s natural beauty and historic integrity while providing opportunities for public enjoyment and education.
Georgia Ornithological Society
The Georgia Ornithological Society’s (GOS) mission is to encourage the scientific study of birds by gathering and disseminating information on Georgia bird life. GOS actively promotes bird conservation by encouraging the preservation of habitats that are vital to the survival of resident and migratory birds. The GOS also gives scholarships, produces scientific publications, and provides fellowship among those interested in nature.
