Upland sandhill habitats feature open pine landscapes that support species adapted to dry, fire-maintained ecosystems. These areas are also home to gopher tortoises and fox squirrels, and provide habitats for songbirds such as Pine Warblers, Common Ground Doves, and a variety of finches.

The blackwater swamp areas are especially productive during the warmer months, when egret and Great Blue Heron rookeries become active. These shaded wetlands attract wading birds and offer opportunities to observe nesting behavior, feeding strategies, and seasonal population changes.

Open grassland areas and forest edges provide hunting and soaring opportunities for a variety of hawks. Bald Eagles are regular visitors to the area, and patient observers may occasionally spot an Osprey fishing over open water.

During the winter months, the area’s ponds and wetlands host an influx of migrating waterfowl. Hooded Merganser, Wood Duck, Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Anhinga, Double-crested Cormorant, and Pied-billed Grebe are commonly observed, adding seasonal diversity to the resident bird community. These ponds also continue to support egrets, herons, and other wading birds year-round.

Together, these varied habitats make McDuffie Public Fishing Area an excellent location for birders of all experience levels, offering year-round viewing opportunities, seasonal highlights, and the chance to observe birds in a wide range of ecological settings.

Jones Lake is open 24/7 for night fishing opportunities. Catch a big fish at a Public Fishing Area and you may be eligible for an Angler Award or even a PFA Record award. Learn more about Angler Awards.
