Blue Heron Nature Preserve
The Blue Heron Nature Preserve is a 30-acre greenspace located in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. The grounds are open every day, and parking and use of the trails is free and open to the public from dawn to dusk. Stroll the trails, keeping an eye out for a variety of birds and wildlife. The Preserve includes 3 miles of trails that wind through 4 distinct habitats; meadow, wetland, woodland and riparian.

The meadow habitat is a wonderful area to observe Great Blue Herons, Red-winged Blackbirds, American Robins and if you’re lucky, Coopers Hawk.
The wetland habitat is an area where you will often find Northern Cardinals, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Northern Mockingbirds, and Eastern Bluebirds.

In the woodland areas, keep your eyes and ears open for the Red-shouldered Hawk, White-breasted Nuthatch, Pine Warbler, and both Downy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers.
In the riparian areas, you will often find some of Georgia’s best fishermen – the Great Blue Heron and Belted Kingfisher.
The Emma Wetlands area is best accessed via the entrance on Emma Lane. On street parking is available and the trails are either hard packed dirt and gravel or wooden boardwalk. There are areas that are not ADA accessible and have stairs.
