Oconee Veterans Park
Oconee Veterans Park, located in Oconee County near Athens, is a 197-acre park that features outdoor walking trails (both paved and unpaved), tennis courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, open grass fields, and a variety of habitats. The extensive fields and surrounding open habitat attract Eastern Bluebird, Eastern Phoebe, Common Nighthawk, Killdeer, Indigo Bunting, as well as many species of sparrows and warblers. Various trees and shrubs provide cover for Northern Mockingbird, Brown Thrasher, Black-and-white Warbler, and Pine Warbler.

Although the park is mainly used for athletic activities and can see heavy use on weeknights and Saturday mornings, it is also a very accessible location for birdwatching in Oconee County.

More than 136 species have been documented in the forested areas, ponds, and open fields. Additionally, more than two miles of trails meander along the perimeter of the park, where you may see and hear Great-crested Flycatcher, White-eyed Vireo, and Pine Warbler. Near the water, look for Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Belted Kingfisher, and Hooded Mergansers in winter.
During spring migration, watch for migrating warblers, Cedar Waxwing, and more. In the fall, eyes on the skies! Watch for migrating groups of Common Nighthawks as they pass over on their way to Central and South America.
